PERMISSION GRANTED: YOU ARE YOUR OWN CAPTAIN

Every day we have the choice - do we take control, turn on autopilot, or let someone else steer?

It's easy to follow a script, using society norms as benchmarks to telegraph to the world that we're OK (or to beat ourselves up and tell ourselves WE'RE NOT OK).

If the safety of benchmarks feels good to you, then carry on. But if there’s something inside of you telling you there’s more for you - KEEP GOING.

BE YOUR OWN CAPTAIN.

THE ONLY PERMISSION YOU NEED IS YOUR OWN.

When we assume agency over our own lives, that's a powerful moment.

Every day we have the choice - do we take control, turn on autopilot, or let someone else steer?

It's easy to follow a script, using society norms as benchmarks to telegraph to the world that we're OK (or to beat ourselves up and tell ourselves WE'RE NOT OK).

Discover & share this Celebrities GIF with everyone you know. GIPHY is how you search, share, discover, and create GIFs.

Striking out on our own and no longer using societal norms as a benchmark is the ultimate boss move. It’s rewriting your script in your own voice instead of accepting the one that was handed to you.

The biggest dilemma we face is choosing to belong to society or choosing to honor ourselves. It seems like a binary choice.

We see this - I can be accepted by the group or I can be isolated as myself.

For most of us, we fear rejection. We have powerful stories and pain from times when we were misunderstood or we were rejected for being different or weird. So we’ve softened our edges, and make a contract with ourselves - it goes something like this:

If I act according to the norms, I am rewarded with a feeling of belonging and safety from the group and I receive security and validation for my choices.

We tell ourselves that our dream life is just that, a dream. If we were to be who we really are - we would be ostracised.

What if it wasn’t a binary choice?

When we honor our path we inevitably find others who are also on their own hero’s journey.

When we call ourselves into our full power, a new world opens before us.

We’re not taught to be brave because our world runs on fear. If you are fearful, you can be controlled. But if you’re willing to work through that fear and If you are willing to be brave, you’ll see that you can’t be controlled.

It’s as easy as switching fuel sources. We’re brought up on fuel coming from external sources. We’re told we have to have the right grades or the right look or the right job to be accepted. So we try to achieve our way to acceptance. We try to blend in so that when we look left and right, we feel like we fit in.

But, if you are willing to be brave and switch to self-generated validation, you’ll see that others have been brave before you and others still are being brave alongside you. If you’re willing to make the shift out of the mainstream and into the unknown you’ll find others who are doing the same.

So stop and ask yourself right now -

Are you fueled by external validation or internal validation?

Like anything that’s new and unknown, it’s hard at first because it’s uncertain, uncomfortable, and most of all unfamiliar. But as you acclimate to your own fuel of validation, external validation means less. It’s nice but unnecessary. Charting your own path becomes innate over time and soon you’ll wonder, how did you ever live any other way?

If we live on comfort and validation - we cannot charter our own ship, we can only be passengers.

Remember, we’re all scientists, and understanding our energy is the work we’re here to do.

We’re designed to transcend.

We’re designed to create.

We’re designed to love ourselves.

There is an infinite number of ways that we can express this - we just need to believe it’s possible FOR US.

We’ve all been given a unique purpose and we all have a distinct path.

By developing trust within ourselves, we can stop putting our power in someone else’s hands.

Our intuition is always with us.

We must only be willing to listen. You can do this. True listening, deep listening begins in the body.

Take five minutes and breathe.

Feel into your body to tune out the mind. Spend time feeling your limbs. Moving your energy from the mind into the body. Feel the heartbeat in your chest. Feel your power at your navel center. Take notice of your expansion. Be in your body. That’s all you need to do.

Is there a story you need to let go of in order to listen to your own wisdom? We write ourselves into linear narratives all the time to make sense of the world we live in. Write a new one or let them all dissipate into the ether. The only moment is now. The captain’s chair is waiting. Are you ready to drive?

Aligning with your design begins in the body

Human design is heart work and a spiritual journey - but it goes hand in hand with loving yourself and loving your body.

It’s a divine commitment to yourself. Choosing to live our design frees us to embrace ourselves as celestial beings in physical form.

Carl Sagan said it best, “we are made of star stuff.”

You and I and all of us are star beings here on earth.

Receive this information, allow it to transform the way you see yourself, allow this divine knowledge to open yourself to living fully in this human experience.

We start with the body.

Living by your Human Design goes beyond being a spiritual journey as it goes hand in hand with loving yourself and loving your body.

In order to connect with our higher self, we must ground within our own physical home in our bodies. I see living our unique design as a divine commitment to ourselves.

Our body is how we experience the physical plane. Our body holds us. I am my body and my body is me. Therefore loving our bodies is essential to our full expression of self. The journey to acceptance isn’t typically a one-day transformation but is a dynamic dance.

Through learning our body (our spiritual vessel), we can welcome in our spirit as our passenger. Our consciousness must align with the natural intelligence of the body. Consciousness (our soul, our spirit) can relax through training the mind to soften, so we can hear our own natural guidance (in the body).

It’s all interconnected.

This isn’t quick work, but life work.

We do this so that we can remove the layers of conditioning to uncover the celestial, holy person underneath.

We are multifaceted creatures - animal instinct, carnal beings with connections to a higher purpose, and the divine. We are water and sound and chemical reactions.

The greatest gift we can give ourselves is the space to explore who we really are.

Committing ourselves to fully embody all of ourselves.

We braid together our mind, body, and spirit to become whole. Through finding ourselves, we normalize this for others, we make it safe to be different, and we open up to the unique possibilities held deep within us.

You hold the answers inside of you already. Be patient and gentle with yourself and begin listening.

What are you hearing today?

Resistance can be a sacred message from the universe

Sometimes we’re forging forward, spending our precious energy on the wrong pursuit because we’re seeking validation externally instead of aligning ourselves with our own navigation 🧭 system.

And our bodies continue to be a witness to our true identity and our true purpose regardless if we’re listening, they always are talking to us, nudging us along our own sacred path. We just have to stop and listen.

It can be scary to take the call or feel those uncomfortable feelings, but growth requires them. Bravery requires them. YOUR DIVINE LIFE REQUIRES THEM. When we bury that signal - we keep ourselves in situations that aren’t right and we’re robbing ourselves of finding a better path.

For a long time, I looked outside of myself for permission. I would question myself and wonder, am I wrong? Why doesn’t anyone else see what I see? I wanted external validation for the thoughts inside my brain.

I was afraid to listen to my own authority and guidance system - because I could feel it leading me down a path I didn’t understand. My friends and family weren’t getting this particular internal call, so I kept hanging up. No, I’m sorry, that person is unavailable. I was afraid to know what would happen if I answered. Who would love me if I completely blew up everything I knew?

It can feel very isolating to think differently or see differently or act differently. We lose the safety of the group and a sense of belonging is a human need.

Which is why we go along with a plan that doesn’t suit us, because shouldn’t we be able to make this work if everyone around us is?

This is why I love Human Design, because it says, ACTUALLY WE’RE ALL MEANT TO LIVE RADICALLY DIFFERENT. This monoculture? Not natural.

When we feel different, when we want to break out but don’t - we hide our light (our individuality). We bury our gifts, the very things that we’re called to use and share.

The vision and point of view that I had (and still have) I would keep to myself when I realized it was REALLY different than the vision of those around me. So I would choose to shelf my vision, keeping it in private in my journal and ensconce myself in the comfort of the shared vision of the mainstream, I could see things the way I thought everyone else saw them and I would accept it because I didn’t like being alone on my own island.

But, denying our nature can only last so long. And I would become so jealous when I would come across someone living how I secretly wanted to live. HOW DID THEY BREAK OUT??? HOW DID THEY STAND ON THEIR OWN PRINCIPLES AND VISION? WHO GAVE THEM PERMISSION TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THE RULES? DON’T THEY KNOW THERE ARE VERY CLEAR RULES!!!

RUDE.

So rude, because now I really had to face what had been buried deep within.

I didn’t know then that that jealousy was a sacred sign from the universe - telling me to take note 📝 SAYING, HELLO! THIS IS WHAT YOU ARE ALSO MEANT TO DO. BREAK OUT AND FORGE A NEW PATH. A PATH THAT DOESN’T YET EXIST AND THAT’S THE COOL PART.

The good news is that it is absolutely never too late to turn up the volume and hear the signal that is alerting you that you’re living against your nature (in Human Design we call this living in the not-self).

Each of us has a not-self alert - a frequency that lets us know we’re in the weeds. How incredible is that? You have a built-in alarm system that tells you - hey, this isn’t for you and we can always choose to tune in.

When we are living in our not-self, we’re working against our natural energy flow; draining our resources, moving further away from our individual authenticity. Many of us live here for long periods of time. So long, we believe that our not-self IS our real self.

This is why resistance is a sacred messenger. Resistance, that loss of flow, is a gift to slow down and look at our surroundings.

That not-self frequency looks different for each energy type:

for Projectors (like me) it’s bitterness.

For Manifestors, it’s anger.

For Manifesting Generators & Generators it’s frustration.

For Reflectors it’s disappointment.

So, when these feelings pop up in you, and they will pop up no matter how much you listen or don’t listen - don’t push ignore, lend them an ear 👂- give them credence.

Think about this not-self frequency as the rumble strips along the highway. These feelings serve a critical purpose, as they slow you down and shake you awake. These feelings say, HELLO! Please pay attention because we’re about to really get off course.

These feelings are sacred messengers here to align you with your transcendent, brilliant path.

It will only be uncomfortable for a little while. And it’s absolutely ok and natural to find yourself living out of alignment. It is a process after all, as we grow and change.

Use these feelings as signs, see them as messengers, and begin to look inward. Talk to them. Journal to them. Walk with them. Ask them what do I need to know?

Are you letting someone else’s values call your shots?

We can sabotage our own dreams by looking to others for permission. We want to do something and then peek around at others, determining if we’re on the right path. Is this normal? AM I NORMAL?

There is no normal. We’re all meant to weave in and out of each other’s lives - creating a patchwork quilt with our colors and visions and acts.

We can only step into our gifts when we’re ready to accept that we’re our own authority.

When we step into our own personal power, making decisions from our center, from our own authority, we no longer have to choose to be limited by the expectations of others. We can feel confident in our own path (even if it’s REALLY OUT THERE)

The only one that can live your authentic life is you. You hear the call and can choose to answer or ignore it. You hold the power to align yourself again.

AND YOU DON’T HAVE TO DO IT ALONE BECAUSE THERE ARE PEOPLE OUT HERE WHO CAN SUPPORT YOU IN YOUR JOURNEY.

As a Human Design guide, I am here for you to uncover who you really are. I am here to help you understand that frequency of the not-self isn’t who you are - it’s that alarm system asking you to wake up to your truth.

As we walk our paths, we meet others who are also living their truth and we begin to live life on a completely new plane - we relate authentically to ourselves and we meet others who are in their truth and it’s much better than hiding your light.

You get to use YOUR GIFTS. Your gifts give you LIFE!

It can be a rocky path, but it is a life that is deeply satisfying.

Are you ready to listen?

How does Human Design factor into our current political climate?

In a world swirling with “fake news,” clickbait journalism, and a self-serving American government that only cares about the deepest pockets, we must learn to find our own authority and take back our power.

Spiritual work + political work go hand in hand. At its core, we learn our Human Design to become radically ourselves. History (especially whitewashed history) shows us that this simple pursuit can prove to be quite dangerous.

Risking your life for your beliefs and your rights is well-documented in history.

I was reminded of how threatened people feel when someone challenges the status quo when watching an episode of Cosmos with Neil deGrasse Tyson (episode one, season one) which centers on Giordano Bruno, a man who was burned at the stake for believing that the universe was ever expansive and was a reflection of the infinity of the divine.

If you are truly doing the work of living your design, then you are continually examining your beliefs, tracing them back to society and the power structures in place, and understanding that systems want our cooperation and not our wellbeing.

Living your design means you are ready to be isolated by living your own way. It’s scary and dangerous to go against the status quo.

However, if we want to live meaningfully, if we want to create a better, safer world for ourselves and future generations, then it becomes imperative to be expanding our bubble and our awareness. We must actively participate in our society and our communities.

We can’t take things on face value, but must learn to ask questions and live our truth. In order to make a more harmonious world, we first become uncomfortable and even scared as we peel back the layers of false narratives.

As you begin to awaken to reality, we take our power back by unsubscribing to the narrative. Ask questions like, who benefits from this story? Who is paying the bills to put these messages out? Who is harmed by this perspective?

Learn from many different sources and learn to trust yourself.

We’re being called to wake up so we can usher in a new era. How will you play your part?

HAPPY NEW YEAR: TRANSITIONING FROM 2019 TO 2020

One of the most transformative experiences I had in 2019 was completing a 200-hour yoga teacher training alongside my husband.

It’s still a bit of a mystery to me how this happened because I don’t consider myself a yogi. However, I always knew I wanted to do a yoga teacher training - it was one of my “bucket” list items if you will.

Teacher training opened my mind to how truly insane yoga is. Yoga is some next level shit and I am not even referring to the people on Instagram looking like little pretzels. I mean just the definition of yoga, where you are linking your breathing and connecting spirit, mind, and body. YOGA CAN BE ANYTHING AS LONG AS YOUR INTENTION IS TO LINK THE SPIRIT TO THE BODY THROUGH PRESENCE & BREATH.

WOW, right?!

Have you ever just stopped a moment to stand?

REALLY felt your feet? Appreciate your toes? See how much they do to keep you upright? Take a minute and DO IT. Right now even. It feels great. It will expand your mind. When I stop to think about how long I could just stand and feel into my body, finding my posture, and just listening, it kind of blows my mind.

I went to my first yoga class in 2008. I was scared out of my mind.

WHAT IS YOGA?

DOES ANYONE KNOW IT IS MY FIRST TIME HERE?

And most importantly, I AM NOT FLEXIBLE.

I was living alone in Hoboken, New Jersey and I had decided that instead of paying for internet & cable, I would be better off joining a gym so that at least I could force myself out of the house and around people.

Yoga was an exercise for getting out of my comfort zone and trying something new.

Afterward, I would feel exhilarated. I stuck with it through the years, trying new studios as I moved into Manhattan and later into Brooklyn. Each time, I would show up thinking, will they know I am not really a yoga person?

When I accidentally tried Kundalini yoga, I realized how truly powerful breathing is. I fell in love with the kriyas and chanting. We have the power to shift our whole mood! Some would say we have the power to change the trajectory of our lives through the power of our breath. (Here’s a simple Kundalini set if you’re curious)

I would day-dream that one day I could find the time and money to study yoga. For whatever reason, I told myself I wasn’t “good enough” to do that - while spending time and money pursuing other things that I didn’t really want to do…(what’s this all about?) The opportunity presented itself this past January. I was invited to join the teacher training at one of my local yoga studios (I am a projector & I do love to be invited!) I was excited and scared. Am I qualified for this? (PS - I’m really into imposter syndrome

The thing no one can prepare you for when embarking on a yoga teacher training is it’s more like life training. More than my body was challenged, my belief system was challenged. My husband and I would come home from an evening of training and spend the next 2 or 3 hours talking about what just happened.

The most powerful thing was being provoked. We need that friction to change.

Our teacher would challenge us during our teaching practice by asking “who says?”

Making us think about our identities and our belief systems. It was simultaneously demanding and liberating.

How often do we box ourselves in with limiting beliefs? How often do we hold on to an identity long after we know it’s time to let it go?

Who says?

It’s a wonderful thing to ask yourself.

Terrifying too.

I’d wager a go at a follow up though. After you ask yourself who says, what if you asked,  WHO CARES? But not in a judgy, dismissive way, it an investigative way, ask yourself and be the detective, WHO ACTUALLY CARES? I bet it’s only you and your assumptions, or you playing out versions of the future in your mind, projecting your feelings out there into some serious worst-case scenario situations. At least, that’s what I like to do!

WHAT IF IT’S NOT PERFECT? WHAT IF IT’S NOT THE BEST? WHAT IF PEOPLE DO NOT LIKE IT OR ME?

When I dig into that judgment, and ask, who cares? I see it’s my own judgment I fear most of all. The fear of failing to live up to my own expectations.

As we move into 2020, what can we release? Where can we let go?

Where can we give ourselves permission to chase our joy?

Happy New Year my darlings!

Some of my resources along the way

here are a few things that have shaped my views

In my 20s living in the TINIEST East Village apartment caused me to come face to face with my shopping habits. In tandem with learning about how much waste is produced through fast fashion, I began my journey into paring down. I learned a ton from the podcast and blog by The Minimalists. I also recommend their Netflix doc, Minimalism: A Documentary About The Important Things - the music for the doc was specifically made for the movie and it’s super calming.

In the same vein, reading Marie Kondo, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing was also hugely helpful at making my home joy-FULL. Those who know me know I have the ability to ruthlessly cut down on my belongings. Marie’s book is truly where I gave myself permission to lean into that talent.

One of my good friends turned me on to Lacy Phillip’s manifestation process at  To Be Magnetic a few years ago and it has challenged me to think about WHY I want something. While Lacy herself can be a bit controversial, I love to listen to her podcast, Expanded, because of the variety of guests who come on - you just never know what you might learn about! I find it so interesting.

Gay Hendricks & Kathlyn Hendricks’ book Conscious Loving, which I’m pretty sure I read because of GOOP. I know this may seem absolutely wild, but no book has changed my life more than this one. No matter your relationship status, this book will open your eyes to how you communicate.

Gay Hendricks’ The Big Leap is the other book that opened my eyes and helped me change course on my life. After learning about Lacy Phillips, I realized this book is what taught me how to manifest in my own life.

Finding Kundalini yoga (and specifically Jarrod & Melody from Brooklyn Healing Arts ) was a blessing and another turning point in my spiritual development. The kriyas and breathwork really helped me connect with the deeper current and because of that, I was able to actually understand the point of yoga. Jarrod’s Friday night sound baths at Golden Bridge Yoga (HOW I MISS THEE!) kept me sane when I was in graduate school + working full-time as a first-year teacher.

I was lucky to be a part of Medi Club/The Big Quiet when I lived in New York City, helping to run small group gatherings where people could connect and meditate and share in the fellowship of likeminded souls. While circles no longer exist in those groups, having a community grounded in genuine connections was such a blessing. Some of my closest friendships have sprung from those gatherings and because of the community, I was able to step into my own power even more.

What are the things that have shaped your viewpoint?

The dark side of manifesting

[Manifestation - the idea that you can call something into existence through thought/prayer/intention]

If you do a quick google on manifestation, the results can be overwhelming. IS EVERYONE AN EXPERT ON MANIFESTING? Or perhaps, is everyone manifesting without me?

The concept of manifesting can stir some controversial feelings. Are we really able to turn our thoughts into physical manifestations? Are all these people selling me snake oil or are we actually able to exert some control over our destiny? Is this a new version of the prosperity gospel (Joel Osteen, Tammy Faye & Jim Bakker) divorced from Christianity?

As you read and research for yourself, you might find yourself thinking there’s some truth to the concept that what we focus on becomes our reality.

At the end of the day, I do believe in manifestation more than I don’t. We all get to choose our belief structures and I want to buy into manifestation and energetics more than I choose to believe in modern religion.

I’ve been aware of/reading/studying the law of attraction & different manifestation practices for over a decade - starting with the Hay House authors (Louise Hay & Abraham Hicks & Anita Moorjani) and more recently (mostly) subscribing to the teachings of Lacy Phillips at To Be Magnetic.

I think there’s a lot of interesting things happening when you set out to manifest. First, you’re taking the time to think about what you want your life to look like & what you want in your life. Getting clear on what we want is one of the most important gifts we can give ourselves.

If there’s one thing we do for ourselves, I think taking the time to look at our lives; our goals and our wants and our dreams and really thinking about them, turning them over, examining the why behind them and understanding if they are truly ours or not is super valuable to our overall daily satisfaction.

Determining our own value systems separate from any other entity is crucial to our happiness! We need to be spending time figuring out our values and goals. So if that process starts for you through manifestation, that’s a great channel to dive into your own value system. A popular, simple manifestation process of making a list and searching for signs that good things are coming to you, can also be a great way to practice choosing positivity or gratitude.

Where things start to get hairy for me are some of the implicit messages floating around in traditional manifestation literature - specifically the idea that we’re inherently entitled to material wealth and are in fact rewarded for our spiritual practice through material gain. The inverse, the idea that we bring on bad things to ourselves and that our lack of gain is a reflection of our spiritual life deeply concerning to me.

FOLLOW THE MONEY

there’s also a bit of a capitalistic dark side to popular manifestation processes: permission for an unbridled pursuit of excess materialism in the name of spiritual perfection and performance.

Popular manifestation teachers encourage and give permission to dream your most materialistic dreams and pursue them with your full extent of your resources, encouraging students to get to the next level by spending loads of money on programs and coaching to achieve the material success they are peddling.

BEWARE OF ‘MY PROGRAM WILL FIND YOU LOVE’

These teachers can press about our insecurities, preying on our deepest fears and insecurities - the reason why we haven’t called in the right partner? WE HAVEN’T DONE THE WORK. It’s our fault we don’t have the life we covet.

The implicit message can be that we’re broken or lost, and can’t get what they have unless we follow their program. All the while, they are tying your success to adhering to their programs. Well, you must not be REALLY doing the work, is the implication for anyone who isn’t manifesting their dreams.

I mean, I get it.

To get people hooked into your brand, you gotta get them with the shiny stuff and the vulnerable stuff. This house? Oh, you know manifestation. THIS PERFECT HUSBAND? MANIFESTATION. Want to know how? Spend X to learn my ways.

Do you feel me on this? Related side note, I LOVE NICE THINGS & I HAVE SPENT A LOT OF TIME AND ENERGY ON SEEKING LOVE. So, this all comes from a place of I’ve been there and I feel like I’ve done and seen it all.

Don’t get me wrong. I am a petty bitch who is into aesthetics and I have spent much of my life, time, and energy looking for the perfect cashmere sweater or pair of jeans to telegraph my personality into the world. But one might say hypocritically, I don’t believe in excess consumerism. Are these at odds? Maybe. To me, they aren’t. I think we can participate in culture and society and enjoy nice things, but in a reasonable, grounded fashion.

To me, ‘manifesting’ wealth in an excess of material goods seems unethical at this point. I think we have to divorce our wishes from the reality of the environment that we live in. I don’t think we get to validate our self-worth through material excess. We don’t ‘deserve’ a bounty of material goods from the universe. Excess is excess. If we want to continue to live on this planet, we must change our outlook and goals in respect to how we consume and how interact with our planet.

I have spent hours crying over my skin and my auto-immune issues, feeling trapped that it is my own mental patterns creating my acne and my lack of perfect health, because there are messages out there that acne and other physical issues and illnesses are just mental patterns being played out on the phyiscal plane. Is there some truth to it? Maybe, but is it the only truth? I don’t think so. You know what finally cleared my skin after I tried essentially everything for 10 years? ACCUTANE. YOU KNOW WHAT HELPS WITH MY AUTOIMMUNE? NOTHING (but hopefully something, eventually?) We are powerful, but we’re not God (if you believe in one).

What am I doing wrong that I can’t find love? AM I UNLOVABLE? I wondered that for years. We all have the same fears, that we’re unlovable and that no one will love us for who we really are. I am joyously in a partnership - I’ve got a wonderful husband, but I don’t believe we met because I am more deserving than someone else. Here is a truth though, everyone is deserving of love and you can absolutely be loved for being who you authentically are.

Our lives are full of ups and downs. We can choose our beliefs, we can choose to see the joy and we can choose to learn lessons, but I hope you don’t choose to pin your worth to these programs.

Our lives are successful and our manifestion practice can be successful even if our live isn’t one giant upward trend graph like we’re taught to believe it will be IF ONLY WE DO THIS [INSERT PROGRAM/BELIEF/ACTIVITY HERE].

All I’m saying, is that I’m seeing so much faux-spirituality being tied up in consumerism and I don’t think you need to spend a dollar to manifest or develop intuition or to get healthy. Can you spend money on these things? Of course and honey, I DO. These are my hobbies and passions. But, are you turned off from trying manifestation processes because they feel overly focused on the material gain? I get it. I think there is space to manifest in partnership with spiritual development.
